CAROLINA STRONG: GET HURRICANE READY WITH AN NC NATIVE

Living on the coast since 2016, and being from NC originally, I have experienced many hurricanes. Namely, in September of 2018, Hurricane Florence left a lasting impression in my community.

Being prepared for a hurricane takes knowledge of the power of the storms, education about your current insurance policy, and a well thought out plan for you and your household.

PREPARING FOR HURRICANE SEASON:

IF YOU PLAN TO EVACUATE:

  • Plan to evacuate as far in advance as possible.

  • Book your lodgings out of the projected path of the storm.

  • Plan to evacuate for a couple of days longer than predicted; unfortunately, our low lying roads and highways can flood days after the storm has already passed.

  • Don’t forget an extra supply of toiletries, medications, clothing changes, and snacks for the road just in case stopping is not feasible.

  • Take your identifying documents and medical records with you in a water-tight storage container (such as extra large ziploc bag).

  • Don’t forget tabout the needs of your pets: foods, medications, waste bags, leashes, etc. Ensure that your pet’s name tag is up to date with current information.

  • Pack back up batteries, chargers, and cash and change for unexpected needs.

  • Ensure that your home is shut tightly and secured. Lock all windows and doors. It is not always recommended that you board up windows and doors, so ask your insurance provider what their preference is for you.

  • While you’re speaking with your insurance, be sure to ask about other specifics of your coverage, such as understanding your riders on your policy for named storms, wind & hail, and flood insurance. Remember, Not All Flood Zones Are Scary Zones!

  • Consider putting clothes (that you’re not taking with you) in garbage bags and hang back in your closet. This may prevent them from getting wet and mildewing before you can get back home to them.

  • Any valuables should be hidden from windows and direct sight from nosy wanderers. Consider a safe in the home if you have concerns about intruders while you’re gone.

  • Take a video or many photos of the interior and exterior of your home to claim current condition if there are damages upon your return.

IF YOU PLAN TO STAY:

  • Don’t wait until the storm is confirmed to quote/purchase a generator! By that time, they are likely sold out. So if you’re considering a generator, go ahead and start that process now.

  • Collect non-perishable food items to last 5 to 10 days pending the severity of the storm.

  • Collect sanitizers, detergents, bleach, etc to permit hygiene and home sanitation.

  • Organize a large plastic bin with the following: battery-operated radio, extra batteries for flashlights and other utilities, first-aid kit, towels and wash rags, identifying documents and medical information, medications, and emergency family, child, and pet needs.

  • Designate a room to flee to in case of spin-off tornadoes.

  • If necessary, fill a bathtub with water, and keep a pitcher by the tub. This is nice if your water service has been interrupted. Educate yourself about the function of your plumbing when there is a storm approaching.

  • Ensure that your home is shut tightly and secured. Lock all windows and doors. It is not always recommended that you board up windows and doors, so ask your insurance provider what their preference is for you.

  • Consider having a chainsaw on hand just in case your roadways need some clearing.

  • You’ll be thankful for activities, board games, puzzles, books, etc. when the power goes out for a few days.

  • *pro tip - prepare for mosquitos after the storm. They love the dampness, so you’ll be glad to have some bug spray on hand!

I’ll add to this list as I think of more! This is the list I operated on in 2018 and 2019 (Florence and Dorian). Also working on a downloadable list so you can have it right on your fridge for that first storm that makes its way!
